Aquaculture Quality Unit
Full Form of AQU
What is AQU?
The Aquaculture Quality Unit (AQU) is a specialised regulatory body under the Indian Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, responsible for monitoring and ensuring the quality and safety of aquaculture products intended for domestic consumption and export. Established to address growing concerns about contamination, disease outbreaks, and international trade standards, the AQU works closely with state fisheries departments, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), and laboratories such as the Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA). It sets protocols for water quality testing, feed composition, and antibiotic residue limits in shrimp, fish, and other farmed species. The AQU also issues certifications to aquaculture farms that comply with national and international standards, thereby boosting India’s reputation as a reliable seafood exporter. In exam contexts like UPSC or state fisheries officer exams, questions often cover the AQU's role in implementing the Coastal Aquaculture Authority Act and its synergy with the Seafood Export Quality Assurance System. The unit is particularly active in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, which are major aquaculture hubs.
