Air Quality Standard
Full Form of AQS
What is AQS?
An Air Quality Standard (AQS) is a regulatory benchmark that specifies the maximum permissible concentration of pollutants in the ambient air to protect human health and the environment. In India, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) establishes these standards under the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) serve as the official AQS for the country, covering pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, ozone, lead, and ammonia. These standards are used by state pollution control boards for monitoring and enforcement, and they form the basis for air quality indices (AQI) reported across Indian cities. Students of environmental science and civil services aspirants frequently encounter AQS in examinations like UPSC, NEET, and state-level competitive tests. Adherence to AQS is critical for mitigating the severe air pollution challenges faced by urban centres, and non-compliance can lead to legal action and public health advisories. The AQS is periodically revised to reflect evolving scientific understanding and international best practices.
