Application Network Element
Full Form of ANE
What is ANE?
An Application Network Element (ANE) is a specialized node in mobile telecommunications networks—particularly in 4G LTE and 5G architectures—that handles application-layer functions such as voice over LTE (VoLTE), video calling, and real-time data services. In the context of India's rapidly expanding digital infrastructure, ANEs are deployed by major telecom operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea to manage the quality of service (QoS) for rich communication services. The ANE sits within the evolved packet core (EPC) or the 5G core, working alongside elements like the Mobility Management Entity (MME) and Serving Gateway (SGW) to route and prioritize traffic. It is especially critical for network slicing, where dedicated virtual networks are created for different applications. Engineering students and professionals appearing for exams such as GATE in Electronics and Communication, or telecom job interviews at companies like Ericsson or Nokia, often encounter the term ANE as part of the 5G curriculum. Its role continues to grow with the rollout of standalone 5G services in Indian cities, enabling low-latency applications like online gaming and remote surgery.
