Automatic License Recognition
Full Form of ALR
What is ALR?
Automatic License Recognition (ALR) is a technology that uses optical character recognition (OCR) to automatically read vehicle license plates from images or video streams. In India, ALR systems are deployed at toll plazas, traffic intersections, and parking facilities to capture number plate data without manual intervention. They play a critical role in FASTag-enabled toll collection, traffic violation detection such as red-light jumping or speeding, and vehicle tracking for law enforcement. The technology works with high-speed cameras and software that can recognize plates in various Indian scripts and formats. ALR is increasingly used under smart city initiatives and by state transport departments to improve road safety and revenue collection. For students preparing for exams like GATE, UPSC, or technical interviews, understanding ALR is relevant as it intersects computer vision, image processing, and public policy. The adoption of ALR in India has grown rapidly since the mandatory FASTag rule in 2021, making it a key component of the National Electronic Toll Collection program.
