Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanny
Full Form of AKM
What is AKM?
AKM is the Soviet-era modernized variant of the iconic AK-47 assault rifle, developed in the late 1950s. In India, the AKM is used by various paramilitary forces, state police counter-insurgency units, and some special operations teams, particularly in areas requiring high firepower and reliability under harsh conditions. It fires the 7.62×39mm intermediate cartridge and features a stamped receiver, making it lighter and cheaper to produce than the original milled AK-47. The AKM is widely encountered in conflict zones such as Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states, where it has been both a standard-issue weapon for security forces and a weapon used by insurgent groups. Its robust design, ease of maintenance, and ability to function in dust, mud, and extreme temperatures make it valued in Indian field operations. While the Indian Army primarily uses the INSAS rifle, the AKM remains relevant in internal security duties. For defence aspirants preparing for exams like NDA or CDS, understanding the AKM's role in India's small arms inventory is useful for general awareness questions.
