All India Toll
Full Form of AIT
What is AIT?
All India Toll (AIT) is an electronic toll collection system implemented by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to streamline the payment of toll fees on national highways across the country. It is part of India's broader push toward cashless, efficient highway travel and integrates with the FASTag system. AIT uses radio-frequency identification (RFID) stickers affixed to vehicle windshields, which are scanned at toll plazas, automatically deducting the fee from a prepaid account. This eliminates the need for cash transactions, reduces congestion at toll booths, and cuts travel time. AIT is deployed on most major national highways and is mandatory for vehicles operating under the national permit scheme. The system also supports interoperability with state highways and urban toll roads. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, knowledge of AIT is relevant under the topics of infrastructure, e-governance, and transport reforms. It represents a significant step toward digital India and smart mobility.
