What is AGP?

Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) is a prominent regional political party in the Indian state of Assam. It was formed on 14 October 1985 following the historic Assam Movement (1979–1985), which was led by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) to protest against illegal immigration from Bangladesh. The party emerged as the political voice of the Assamese people and came to power in the state shortly after its formation, with Prafulla Kumar Mahanta becoming the youngest Chief Minister in India at age 32. The AGP is known for its focus on issues such as protection of Assamese identity, language, culture, and land rights. Over the years, the party has formed alliances with national parties like the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC) as per electoral necessities. It was part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from 2016 to 2021 and contested the 2021 Assam Assembly elections in alliance with the BJP. However, the party's influence has declined in recent decades due to factionalism and the rise of other regional forces.
