Active Galactic Nucleus
Full Form of AGN
What is AGN?
An Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) is a compact, highly energetic region at the center of some galaxies, powered by accretion of matter onto a supermassive black hole. In India, AGNs are studied extensively using observatories like the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) near Pune and the AstroSat space mission launched by ISRO. These studies help astronomers understand galaxy evolution, black hole growth, and high-energy astrophysical processes. AGNs emit radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma rays, and are classified into types such as quasars, radio galaxies, and Seyfert galaxies. In the Indian context, AGN research contributes to global collaborations and is often featured in competitive exams like UPSC, IIT JAM, and CSIR NET, where questions on black hole physics and astronomical phenomena appear. Understanding AGNs is crucial for decoding the universe's history and structure, and Indian institutions are actively involved in this frontier field of science.
