Armoured Fighting Vehicle
Full Form of AFV
What is AFV?
An Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFV) is a military vehicle protected by armour and armed with weapons, designed for combat operations on land. In the Indian context, AFVs include main battle tanks like the T-90 and Arjun, infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) such as the BMP-2, and armoured personnel carriers (APCs). These vehicles are integral to the Indian Army's mechanised infantry and armoured corps, providing mobility, firepower, and protection to soldiers during operations. AFVs are used in a variety of missions, from border defence and counter-insurgency to peacekeeping and mechanised warfare. The Indian Army extensively operates Russian-origin T-72 and T-90 tanks, alongside indigenous Arjun tanks, and has modernised its fleet with upgrades to night vision, fire control systems, and reactive armour. AFVs are a key topic in defence exams like the Combined Defence Services (CDS) and National Defence Academy (NDA) exams, where questions on tank types, armour composition, and vehicle roles frequently appear. Their role in India's land warfare strategy continues to evolve with indigenous development programmes such as the Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV) project.
