Unique Identification Number (UID)
Full Form of AADHAR
What is AADHAR?
Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to every resident of India. It is based on biometric data such as fingerprints, iris scans, and demographic information. Launched in 2009, Aadhaar serves as a universal identity proof that eliminates duplicate and fake identities. In India, it is used extensively for verifying identity in welfare schemes, bank account openings, SIM card issuance, income tax filings, and digital transactions. Aadhaar is central to the government's direct benefit transfer (DBT) system, ensuring subsidies reach intended beneficiaries without leakage. It also enables e-KYC (electronic know-your-customer) authentication, simplifying paperless verification across sectors. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, understanding Aadhaar's legal framework, Supreme Court judgments (e.g., privacy concerns), and its role in Digital India is crucial. Aadhaar is not a proof of citizenship but of residence, and its linkage with PAN and bank accounts has been mandated for financial transparency. Despite privacy debates, Aadhaar remains India's most widely adopted identification system, with over 1.3 billion enrolments as of 2024, powering the nation's digital economy and governance.
