Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting
Full Form of AAA
What is AAA?
AAA stands for Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting, a framework used in network security and access control to manage user identities and permissions. Authentication verifies who a user is, typically via passwords, biometrics, or certificates. Authorization determines what resources or services that user can access, based on policies or roles. Accounting tracks user activity, recording sessions, data usage, and billing information for auditing and reporting. In the Indian IT sector, AAA protocols such as RADIUS and TACACS+ are widely deployed in corporate networks, government data centers, and telecom infrastructure to secure remote access and VPN connections. The framework is also integral to cloud services and IoT devices used across India. For students preparing for competitive exams like GATE, UGC NET, or CEH, understanding AAA is essential as it frequently appears in questions on network security and identity management. Its structured approach helps prevent unauthorized access and ensures compliance with data protection regulations. The concept is applied daily in scenarios like logging into a bank app (authentication), checking account balance (authorization), and recording login times (accounting).
